Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option. They consist of a titanium root and a replacement tooth. They look and function just like natural teeth, which is why they’re such a popular restoration choice for so many people who visit Dr. Chee.

Dental implants are anchored directly into your natural bone tissue, creating a permanent bond and eliminating any concern that your tooth will shift out of position over time.

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

The roots of your teeth are anchored in your jaw bone. Every time you bite down, you’re stimulating that bone, which keeps it healthy and strong. When one or more natural teeth are missing, that bone tissue stimulation stops.

A missing tooth also leaves the adjacent teeth without an adequate support structure. Very often, the surrounding teeth shift out of place, which can cause problems with your bite.

Aesthetics are also an important consideration when you have one or more missing teeth. Dental implants offer a tooth replacement option that is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

How are dental implants installed?

Getting implants requires several visits with Dr. Chee. She begins the process with a thorough dental exam to ensure you’re a good candidate for implants.

Next, Dr. Chee and her team opens a small portion of your gum tissue to access the underlying bone. She drills a tiny pilot hole and guides the metal implant into the proper position.

It takes a few months for your bone tissue to bond around the new implant. During this time, the dental lab creates a custom crown, which becomes the visible portion of your new implant. This healing time is also important because it allows your jaw bone to create a strong bond with the implant, making it able to withstand the force of your bite.

Once the healing process concludes, Dr. Chee installs the crown.
